Description

The Vaultek Smart Station DS2i is more than a quick-access safe. Among its functions (in addition to safely storing a defensive handgun), it charges a phone and other devices; tells the time, temperature and humidity; and stores other valuables.

The Vaultek Smart Station DS2i is a clandestine storage area for a handgun. It is not obviously a gun safe and blends in on a nightstand or kitchen counter, or in the foyer area of a home, making it ideal for home defense. Rob Pincus reviews the features of the Smart Station, including access, power, securing it to furniture, and how its app works.

We're going to take a look at the Voltech DS two I smart station, quick access safe, but it's more than just a quick access safe as you probably guess by the fact that it's called the smart station, this thing will allow you to charge your phone. It tells you what time it is, it tells you the humidity and the temperature as well. Uh It has a charging ports on the back. It is designed to be plugged in, but it also has a battery backup in case you have a power failure or you have to move the safe around. And of course, even though it has all the electronics we're going to talk about in a second, it does come with two manual keys as well that you can use to open this up. Should it be dead on the battery backup and not plugged in? So, what's the smart station all about? Well, the smart station is a clandestine staging area for a defensive handgun. That's the way I look at it and you could also use it to secure your watch your other valuables, your wallet, whatever it is, your jewelry you wanted to put in there. But really optimally, this lets you keep a firearm in some place like the kitchen. Uh You might think the beds stand, you might think the foyer area near your entrance to your house. This lets you keep a hand and staged and ready to go in something that isn't obviously a safe, if you didn't notice the keypad and sort of think about it two or three times or recognize the Voltech logo, you wouldn't know that this actually does have a space inside of it for a firearm or again, any other valuables. So what's cool about this again is that it can be in plain sight, it doesn't look like it's safe. It fits in with the house, it fits in, you know, you get different colors. Also, there's a couple of different sizes available. Um Again, this is the DS two I and that means it's gonna have the keypad and the biometric. Now Voltech is, as far as I'm concerned, cutting edge of technology, they've got great latches, they've got great pry resistance. They've got 18 gauge steel. It's a secure box. Now, any of these boxes. Yeah, sure. You take this outside and you go at it with a jack hammer, sledge hammer, you give yourself some time effort and energy. You're gonna, you want to break into it like any safe or bank vault for that matter if you have enough time, energy, interest and access to it. But what's nice about this is, again, it's in plain sight, it blends into your home. You come home and you, if you're like me, you have a place where you kind of dump everything, whether it's a tray or an area where you have all your chargers plugged in. And for me it's in the kitchen. Wherever yours is, this is where you're gonna wanna put that smart station, right? Because now what happens? Well, I'm gonna be able to come home, keep the gun in a safe direction. I'm gonna clear that gun. I'm gonna put it there. I'm gonna put the loaded magazine next to it and I have wireless charging capability for my phone that clicked on there. I've got uh what I can just put anything I want in there. I can put my wallet down, I can put my car keys down. This is where I'm gonna dump everything kind of when I come and go. I get ready to leave the house. I know right where it is and my phone is charged also having one place for your phone and especially any phone that you're gonna put here. Remember any of your phones that are ST receiving signal, especially if one is modern enough to do wireless charging. If it's receiving signal, it can be used to make a 911 emergency call, whether it's on contract or not. So this lets me keep maybe a white light. I can keep my flashlight here, maybe I can have a medical kit, something like that. And if I'm in a situation where I have to make that 911 call, I want my light, I also want my firearm. I can very quickly come in, use the keypad or it's a little bit awkward from this position. I can come in and use my biometric scan as well. The biometric scanner will hold up to 20 fingerprints. Two of them are admin fingerprints. What I usually suggest if you have multiple people in the house, obviously, you're gonna split the admin code. But if you don't have multiple people in the house, then you're gonna use your primary finger and your thumb or primary index finger and maybe your support index finger. Um I also recommend using a couple of those 20 slots to record the same finger. So that way I get getting multiple recordings and the computer has that much more likelihood of quick and easily finding the fingerprint that you're trying to get it to read. So this opens up and then boom, I can grab the gun put around in the chamber and be ready to go. Now, if I wanted to put something like a trigger safe, trigger guard or a flat holster in here as well, then that would allow me to safely and responsibly keep round chambered but still have the trigger covered while it was inside of the safe area. Obviously, nothing wrong with that. Um this is a relatively slim gun, a mid size slim PD 10 but something like this, a relatively large Meta S FX uh with the threaded barrel on it, the extended base play and a red dot This will also fit nicely into the safe and allow me to close it up. And then I got my training code in here. It is 1234 boom that'll pop open. One of the other cool things about this is it does have that USB and USB C port in the back if you happen to have. And this is becoming more and more common, a white light or a laser that uses a charging port instead of worrying about batteries going dead. Um You can actually plug this in to the USB or USB C in the back with the Meridian. It's a USB, I get the red light. I know that it's charging and there's enough space here for me to close that safe. And I think that I've, uh I haven't done anything to affect the security of this safe. Um Now it's a little bit more obvious right that this something going on here other than it's just a, a clock. But if I were to maybe be a little bit trickier about that, um I might be able to hide it as well if I was worried about doing that. But I thought that was a nice feature. The other thing, of course, if your phone doesn't have wireless charging, you can plug your phone in here. Um Some lights also use chargers. Now, whether it's a A USB type interface or a magnet interface that will allow you to use these charging ports for your tactical stuff, right, for your emergency things as well. Uh The other thing that you need to know about the safe is that it comes with an app and the app on the volte side is actually really cool. It's, it's not only um functional in terms of settings. So things like the brightness on the display upfront, um I can decide if I wanna be Fahrenheit or Celsius, that kind of stuff. Um But the other thing that I can also do is monitor the safe. I can know whether or not it's been tampered with. Um, you can see right now if I get the angle, right. This says that it is locked. Um The battery is 100% I can, if I put in a bad code, it's going to pretty quickly tell me reconnect on my Bluetooth. This one happens to be on a Bluetooth and it will tell me tamper detected, you can actually open the safe remotely as well, which is kind of cool. Um I think that's important to know uh when you're thinking about what you're gonna integrate in terms of technology being able to open remotely, that also means that you can open the safe for somebody else when they don't know the code, if you needed to change the code for any reason or if there's someone in your house that you don't want to have unsupervised access. But if they ask permission and you know that there's a reason they need to get into that gun, you can open that up. Um, we can also set the interior, uh, brightness on the uh, interior light, which is in here. We also can set uh the sound, we can turn the sound up or down or turn it off. And again, it affect the brightness on the display upfront as well. Um A history log also will be able to tell you when it's been opened and by whom, so you can program in the fingerprints or give people um, only code access and you can label them as well. So you'll know when it was opened, who opened it. You'll also know when it was tampered with. Um, it's as far as this, the security of the box itself. Uh We obviously this could be taken. I said, take it outside and, and spend a bunch of time trying to, to make it work. What we have here is a steel cable. So we have this braided uh plastic coated cable. This can be attached again, if you're gonna be in the kitchen, uh you might end up attaching it, you know, through the countertop or through one of the openings uh to something like your plumbing. Um Any other kind of a situation, you could put an eye bolt into your wall, attach it there so you can secure this. If it's the nightstand, you can attach it to the furniture in the bedroom as well. Um You can secure this in a hotel room. Um And this just makes it that much harder to get the time and access and private access to the fire to the safe so that someone's going to be able to get in there to the firearm. So this just again deters any kind of uh access to the gun. And, and that is the number one responsibility. I think of all firearms owners to make sure that we're preventing unauthorized access to our firearms, firearms that are being staged for defensive use, they're in use, right. That is in here does not need to be separated from ammunition. It doesn't need to be disassembled because it is staged for defensive use. But I wanna make sure that only myself or authorized persons or someone that I give authorization to can get into it. And that's the, the service that is provided by this Volte Ds two I smart station. Uh definitely one of the cooler options. And I think one of the options, a lot of people have been excited about since it came out about a year and a half ago. And now the new larger size is available from Volte
