Stun Gun vs Taser

Description

In our stun gun vs Taser comparison, PDN Contributor Barret Kendrick of Bearco Training discusses how these less-lethal weapons work. They are different both in the technology they use and the results they produce.

STUN GUN

A stun gun arcs an electrical charge from barb to barb and is 100% pain compliance – it shocks the person at the surface. If you have seen movies where a stun gun renders someone unconscious, that’s not how it works in real life. Stun guns do not cause anyone to lose consciousness.

A stun gun only causes a person pain while the device is actually touching that person. When it is no longer touching the person, he no longer feels any pain. This can potentially cause problems in a self-defense scenario.

TASER

Taser is a brand name for a conducted energy weapon that works on very different technology than a stun gun. It is not all surface-level pain like the stun gun. The Taser fires out two different barbs when you press the trigger on it. The barbs are designed to have some deviation as they go out. The conducted energy uses the body to complete the circuit. It passes through the body and penetrates and shuts down control over the muscles that the barbs penetrated.

Under perfect conditions, where you do get a neuromuscular shutdown, a disconnect between the muscles and the brain happens. During that disconnect is when a person loses control and falls over. This can give you the chance to back away and get away.

STUN GUN VS TASER

A traditional stun gun does not produce a neuromuscular incapacitation. Only conducted energy weapons like the Taser do that. Before using either weapon, you should have a good understanding of what they are, how to use them, and what limitations they have. Then get training with them.

When we hear terms like stun gun and taser, most of the time people picture something like this. You know, we've seen it in the different movies when you turn it on it makes that nice popping sound. We're all familiar with that arcs, that electrical charge from Barb to Barb right here as opposed to the brand taser, which is actually something that works on very different technology where these are called conducted energy weapons. This is your traditional stun gun with the stun gun. It is 100% surface level pain compliance. It shocks someone at the surface and we've all seen in the movies where the kidnapper has one of these puts it to the neck of the victim. The person falls unconscious and ends up in the trunk of the vehicle that is taken off, becomes victim inside of that movie. Well, that's something that was created by Hollywood. It's something that doesn't really happen unless somebody is just passing out because of the shock of the pain. They're not, this device is not actually doing something that causes them to lose consciousness at all. It's all surface level pain as soon as this is no longer in contact with that person. There is no more pain, which means they can continue to create that violent action that they were doing before. So that's our traditional stun gun. The difference with conducted energy weapons like this one from Taser is that it is not all surface level pain. They fire out different barbs, two different barbs when you press the trigger on it, fires out these different barbs and they're designed to have some deviation as they go out. So what ends up happening is we like to split the hemispheres on the, on the aggressor to where instead of being all surface level that conducted energy actually uses the body to complete the circuit and passes through the body and penetrates and actually shuts down control over those muscles that those barbs penetrated into and under the perfect conditions where you do get that neuromuscular shutdown. There's a disconnect in between the muscles and the brain. And during that disconnect, that's where we see those traditional videos where somebody buckles up loses control and falls over. We don't get that neuromuscular incapacitation from your traditional stun guns only from those conducted energy weapons. Now, these aren't mystical objects. There are still different variables that come into play. We still need to have a good understanding of them, how to use them, get training with them and understand the limitations that they may have. So it's important to understand when you hear the term stun gun. We're talking about that traditional pain compliance device, which is very different than the word taser, which is nothing more than the brand taser that makes the conducted energy weapons. The conducted energy weapons can make a very great tool for self defense. You know, with them, with that neuromuscular incapacitation, it causes that person to lose control over that muscle function during that time giving you the ability to be able to back away to get away.
