Description

Many people still use a revolver for home defense or concealed carry, but usually face a compromise: concealability and hand fit versus capacity. PDN Contributor, Grant Cunningham, looks at a Smith & Wesson Model 66, a medium-frame gun that was returned to production last year but is surprisingly little-known.

Hi, I'm grant Cunningham, back again for the Personal Defense Network at the 2015 NRA show in Nashville, Tennessee. Now, Smith & Wesson, of course, is one of my favorite manufacturers of revolvers. And, late last year they came out with a new model- Well, actually it's an old model. This is new for now, but it's actually an old model. This is kind of odd. Those of you who have had Smith & Wesson revolvers may remember the K-frame, one of the great revolvers from Smith & Wesson. One of the great revolver series from Smith & Wesson. And, it disappeared from the line a number of years ago, and late last year they brought it back in the form of the model 66. Now, the really neat thing about the K-frame revolver is that it's a relatively small six-shot revolver. Compared to the larger 686 or L-frame gun, it's nice and light and trim and relatively small. The great thing about it is that the cylinder doesn't have a really wide width. It's very easy to conceal if you choose to carry it concealed. Relatively light, it's lighter and smaller than the model 686 L-frame. So this is new to a lot of people. A lot of people aren't aware that they brought this model out again. And, it's one of those models that we've kinda missed for a number of years. Now they offer it in the four and a quarter inch barrel. And admittedly, the four and quarter inch barrel, perhaps not a really great concealed carry gun. Although I've certainly been known to carry a four inch revolver from time to time concealed. But it does make a really great home defense revolver, if you decide that you want a revolver for a home defense gun. Again, relatively lightweight, easy trigger reach, and a much nicer gun overall for a wider range of hands and a wide range of strengths in a home defense scenario. So, if you want a revolver for a home defense gun but say the 686 might feel just a little larger, a little unwieldy. The model 66 again, back in the Smith & Wesson line might be a really good choice.
