Description

What rifle accessories do you need when setting up an AR-15-type rifle for general everyday use and defensive use? PDN Contributor Don Edwards of Greenline Tactical gives his recommendations.

HOW TO ATTACH RIFLE ACCESSORIES

Most modern AR-15s have a rail cover/system for attaching rifle accessories: a Picatinny rail, Magpul M-LOK, or Bravo Company Mfg KeyMod. The AR in this video has an M-LOK. Research which system will work best for you and your rifle.

SLING

Don considers a sling very important for a rifle, especially a rifle that is intended for defensive or tactical use as well as rifle training. A sling is like a holster for your rifle. You wouldn’t walk around without a holster for your pistol, and Don wouldn’t walk around without a sling on his rifle.

Rifle slings come in single- or two-point types. Don’s rifle has a two-point sling. He can wear it loose or cinch it down tight to wear the rifle close against his body. This leaves his hands free to do other tasks if necessary.

RED-DOT OPTIC

Red-dot optics give you the ability to stay focused on the threat while giving you sights to shoot more precisely. Many high-quality red-dot optics exist today. One of the related rifle accessories is a solid mount to attach the optic to — mounts come in different heights to cater to different applications.

LIGHT

A good, bright weapon light is one of the most valuable rifle accessories and self-defense tools. Often a defensive incident takes place after dark, or in the dark interior of a home or building. You do not want to shoot at anything you cannot positively identify.

BACK-UP IRON SIGHTS

In a life-or-death emergency, having a backup system is critical. On Don’s rifle, the red-dot optic is mounted in a quick-release mount, so that if the red dot fails for any reason, it can quickly be detached and the iron sights brought up for use.

I also fixed a hinged 3 X magnifier behind my red dot. With that, I'm good for both close and mid-range targeting.

Hey everybody, Don Edwards here and I'm here to talk to you today. A little bit about my recommendation for setting up an AR-15 style rifle for general everyday use and also for defensive use. So here we have a, an A R uh most modern AR-15s these days have attaching points for different accessories, picatinny rail. Uh This one here is M lock style so you can attach different accessories. But what accessories do you need to get started with this um in this context. So first let's start here at the back and I've got a sling on here. A sling in my mind is very important for any rifle, especially one that is intended for uh self defense or any kind of tactical use as well. What a sling is? It's like a holster for your rifle. You wouldn't walk around with a pistol without a holster. I wouldn't walk around without a sling on my rifle. So what that does for me? This here is a two point sling that I really uh like I can wear this loose and hold this in my hands and I can cinch it down nice and tight and, and snug this thing up against my body if I need to use my hands or something else, like, maybe I have to grab my Children or something like that just to get them out of the room or whatever. So, a sling is very important when I have to have something in my hands besides this rifle. Right. Moving forward, we have a red dot optic red dot optics are very, very handy. They give you the ability to stay focused on your threat while having the sites to shoot more precisely. Therefore, you don't miss and you, and you, uh, you finish the job more safely and accurately. So red dots have come a long way. There are many options out there that are, are high quality that you can look at and a good solid strong mount. This one happens to be really tall for, for different applications. Another thing here is a flashlight, a good bright weapon, light is very valuable on a rifle, especially since a lot of times when we need these things for self defense and home defense, it's dark, even if indoors, if it's not night time, it could still be dark and we don't want to be shooting at things that we can't positively identify. We want to make sure that we can identify our family members from an intruder or kids from some sort of threat to our family or something of that nature. We don't want to have any mistakes So having uh a good solid light on our rifle, like this is very important to me what's important most important is that you have it not necessarily where it is, this one here is over on the side. So therefore, because it's on the side, I have a pressure switch right here on the top that I can reach very easily and very intuitively to turn it on and off. And I can do that with either hand. So I don't have to worry about where it is, how to reach it with my hands. I have a set of iron sights here. These are backups, obviously in a situation where we're talking about life and death. Having some redundancy is always a good idea. So we put back up iron sights on here just in case something were to go wrong. A battery were to die. A piece of glass were to get broken. And this happens to have a easy to take off, quick release. So this mount could be taken off in an emergency and we could go back to iron sights like we, we had before in the past. So there you have it. This is my rifle. These are my recommendations for setting your gun up for everyday use and self defense.
