Forget the Flip

Rob Pincus
Duration:   1 mins

Description

When shooting a firearm and it runs out of ammo, what do you do? Rob Pincus hits the magazine release and the magazine drops free. And that is exactly what’s supposed to happen. It’s the miracle of gravity.

It’s also all you need, or all you should need, to get the empty magazine out of your defensive firearm. If you push the magazine release and the mag does not fall free, something is wrong with your gun, or maybe you’ve chosen a poor combination of gun and magazine.

On the range during rifle training courses, Rob sometimes sees students do a flip – they flip the gun forcefully to the side, as if the magazine needs help being ejected from the magazine well. But it really shouldn’t.

Forget the flip. Use gravity.

A little light buffing on the inside of the magwell does wonders.

See what just happened there? I hit the magazine release, and the magazine dropped free. That is exactly what's supposed to happen. It's the miracle of gravity and it's really all you need or at least all you should need to get the empty magazine out of your defensive firearm. If you push the magazine release and your magazine isn't coming out of your defensive firearm, something is wrong with that gun or maybe you've just chosen a poor combination of magazine and gun. Now on the range, sometimes during classes, I will see people do this flip as if the magazine needs help getting out of the magazine well. And again, it really shouldn't. Use gravity, forget the flip.
