Rob Pincus discussed the importance of avoiding emotional responses to potential threats, real threats or other events in your life that could escalate the danger to yourself or others. In addition to immediate physical dangers, Rob discussed situations where you may put yourself in jeopardy of having to deal with negative financial, emotional, social and legal aftermath that could have been avoided if you had responded in a more rational and calm way. It is very easy to let your emotions (anger, fear, offense, curiosity, etc.) get the best of you when you don’t have a plan, haven’t thought ahead of time how you might respond to certain situations and/or haven’t practiced those responses enough. Every year, many people find themselves tragically shooting people who don’t need to be shot, often family members, because they let their emotions carry their responses. Similarly, many people find themselves in dangerous situations that they could’ve avoided if they had thought through a better response of avoidance or de-escalation. Rob answered questions from PDN Members and the live audience and offers some tips on how to prepare to respond as rationally and appropriately as possible.
