Lesson One establishes the context of the training that follows and provides students with foundational principles and techniques for fighting in confined spaces, particularly when pressed to a wall or, worse, on the ground at the base of a wall. Todd helps students focus on establishing a fighting posture, then attaining a dominant fighting position in order to escape or force an attacker into submission. Through the “wall work” training of Lesson One, students learn specific grappling techniques like the bicep tie, arm drag, cross-face claw, knee grip-release and more. The demonstrations provided and techniques shown provide a necessary base of knowledge for the remainder of the lessons that follow.
Getting to a concealed handgun in the midst of a close-quarters attack requires careful consideration. In Lesson Two of Fundamentals of Confined Combatives, the techniques learned in Lesson One are expanded upon to help students safely transition to a concealed handgun, particularly when being attacked with closed hand strikes, one of the most common forms of close-quarters attacks. Additionally in Lesson Two, Todd trains a series of pre-emptive strike techniques to create separation from an attacker, providing the opportunity to evade or transition to higher force, as the situation dictates.
To conclude the Fundamentals of Confined Combatives class, and rounding out Todd Fossey’s integrated approach to defensive training, Lesson Three returns to “wall work”. This time, Todd provides specific instruction for retaining a concealed handgun worn in the appendix position. The forward-facing nature of appendix carry increases the possibility of revealing, or losing control of, a concealed handgun during a close-quarters fight. Todd demonstrates a number of ways of protecting and retaining an appendix carried concealed firearm whether pinned to a wall in the standing position, or on the ground.
