Developing highly-effective defensive shooting skills involves more than putting holes in paper at the range. Appropriately, Lesson One of the Defensive Shooting Skills class helps you integrate cognitive challenges into your range training sessions, complicating your balance of speed of precision. Simple in design, the drills you see can be used in virtually any training environment and will force you to process critical information, recognize the need to shoot, then identify and engage the threat as appropriate. Use these cognitive drills, along with your observations of the students practicing them on camera, and the Practice Guide that accompanies this Block of instruction, to guide your time at the range.

This lesson of instruction covers two often-overlooked topics that are implicitly important to reality-based defensive firearm training, namely presenting a handgun from concealment and the use of visualization on the range. First, Rob Pincus leads a group of shooters through a series of drills that address a variety of concealment setups, carry configurations and defensive shooting situations that will help you plan your practice, no matter your choice of carry. While the drills and techniques are presented on a live fire range, they can be easily replicated with a replica or inert training pistol that matches the gun you carry every day. Then, following a question from an on-range student, Rob provides valuable commentary on the value of visualization to guide your practice on any shooting range. By using the visualization techniques presented here, you’ll learn to avoid a common tendency to choreograph shooting repetitions or fall into a repetitive rut.

Concluding this Defensive Shooting Skills class, Lesson Three provides valuable instruction for moving while armed and in the ready position, including techniques for moving around objects, transitioning from a two-handed to one-handed grip and engaging a threat. Using a simple range set up, Rob Pincus presents students with plausible scenarios that require the shooter to change their direction of movement, transition their shooting grip, process information and engage a threat. Concluding this unique range session, you’ll also observe an unconventional drill that tests the shooters’ ability to access a firearm from a locked case, then chamber a round and address a threat. The scenarios presented offer you a unique opportunity to consider, and integrate, some authentic but often overlooked areas of practice as part of your defensive training plan.

Description

This dynamic training presentation goes beyond the basics and once again breaks the mold of traditional shooting instruction. Taking a fresh approach to defensive shooting skill development, this class uses advanced, easy to follow drills and skill-building exercises that align your physical skill to stop a lethal threat with the cognitive ability to recognize and react to the need to shoot. You’ll be an exclusive observer of a live-fire range session led by PDN Executive Director Rob Pincus as he leads five shooters through a series of increasingly complex defensive shooting drills and reality-based challenges, letting you learn the demonstrated skills while you anticipate and prepare for your own time at the range.
